On April 15, gift baskets greeted two tigers, Apache and Nitro, as they arrived at the Carnivore Preservation Trust in Pittsboro, North Carolina. The baskets were full of “big cat goodies” like toys and catnip. The male tigers were recently rescued from a junkyard in Kansas, and the gift baskets were intended to help the tigers acclimate during their first days in quarantine.

Action to free the tigers was first taken in May 2008 when a citizen alerted PETA about seeing lions and tigers in a junkyard. PETA then sent exotic animal experts to the site where they determined the environment was unhealthy and unsafe for the animals. After another incident in February 2009, the Carnivore Preservation Trust agreed to take the tigers, and the lions were sent to the Detroit Zoo.

Wednesday, five gifts baskets were delivered to the Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Program office in Port Townsend, Washington. Each basket contained a broom, paper towels, pot holders, measuring cups, a mop, and other household items.

The baskets were created and donated by women from First Presbyterian Church, and were intended to be “home-warming” gift baskets for women leaving a Port Townsend shelter called Pat’s Promise. The shelter houses 12 women and their children. While there, the women are assisted in finding safe places to live. According to the shelter, once women find a home, they have difficulty providing basic household items because they can’t afford them.

After hearing about the need, some women from the church decided to do something. After taking an offering, the women were able to pay for the baskets to be filled with essential items including things like matches, a can opener, plastic containers for leftovers, cleaning supplies and paper products.

Additionally, the shelter is currently working on creating a book to go with each basket that has directions for making green-cleaning products, inexpensive recipes, and inspirational thoughts about housekeeping.
